Santa Muerte is a folk saint recognized in Mexico and Latin America and some parts of the United States. As representative of a "holy death", this folk saint is believed to ease passage into the afterlife and is often symbolic of healing and protection. Sometimes also referred to as Santisima Muerte (the most holy death) and is believed by some to be the female counterpart of the grim reaper.
